Careers?

Some students may have a clear career path in mind. Where this is the case, there are certain subjects that students should study. By selecting subjects related to potential career interests, students can gain valuable insights and experiences that aid in making informed decisions about their future professions. Where students have a specific career path in mind, they may wish to explore the student SharePoint careers page which has detailed information on a variety of career paths (this has also been shared through Satchel One). Students will need to log in using their normal school username and password to view content.

Personal Interests?

Where students do not have a defined career path in mind, they should consider their personal interests and make choices around these. The diverse range of subjects available allows students to explore areas they are passionate about, fostering a love for learning. Whether it's delving into the humanities, languages, or the arts, selecting subjects aligned with personal interests can make the learning experience more engaging and fulfilling. It is important that students make choices based on their own personal interests, rather than following their peer group. Students may wish to explore the subjects on offer by reading through the Options Booklet. Subject leaders and teaching staff will also be giving students further information through assemblies and lessons in the new year.

Transferable Skills?

In addition to the subject matter, GCSE option choices contribute to the development of essential transferable skills. Whether it's critical thinking, problem-solving, effective communication or time management, each subject develops valuable skills that are applicable across various aspects of life. These skills are not only vital for academic success but are also highly sought after by employers in the professional world. GCSE option choices provide students with the opportunity to become well-rounded individuals with a broad knowledge and skills base. Exposure to a variety of subjects will ensure that students develop a holistic understanding of the world, fostering intellectual curiosity and adaptability. Students should therefore consider choosing a variety of subjects to allow them more choice in the future.

In conclusion, GCSE option choices are really important. This decision-making process empowers students to shape their educational journey, explore their passions, and lay the foundation for future success. As we guide our students through the process of selecting GCSE options, we must emphasise the significance of making informed choices that align with their goals and aspirations.

Resources to help

To assist with these choices, there are a range of resources available online and events in school after the Christmas break. 

• As already mentioned above, a link to the SharePoint Careers page webpage has been shared with the students via Satchel One. This has a variety of specific careers advice and other links for students to explore. A link to this is available through the Options area of the school’s website: Bradfield School - Year 9 options 2023 - 24
• I have spoken to the students in an assembly to explain the process, how many option choices they will have and how they will be supported.
• The options booklet can be viewed online through the school’s website here..
• January 9th – Options information evening for students and parents/carers. This will be held in the main hall between 6-7pm.
• Week commencing 15th January: a week of assemblies for Y9 where subject leaders from the option subjects will present key information to students.
• Students will be given opportunities to ask further questions in lessons during January.
• Options will be a focus in Personal Development lessons in the new year.
• Options forms will be distributed to students on Monday 22nd January via form tutors.
• The deadline for these to be handed in to reception will be Friday 2nd February 2024.
