Health and Social Care

What is our curriculum intention and purpose?

To provide a course which is designed to inspire and empower students with the knowledge, skills, and understanding necessary to make a meaningful impact in the health and social care sector. The program provides learners with a strong foundation to progress into further education, apprenticeships, or careers in a field that values compassion, communication, and professionalism.

What is our learning journey?

How is the curriculum sequenced?

The BTEC Level 1/2 Technical Award in Health & Social Care is sequenced to allow learners to develop an understanding of human development, health and wellbeing through experiencing practical scenarios linked to the learning aims. Components 1 and 2 are assessed through summative assessments. The curriculum concludes in year 11 with an exam, component 3, which assesses the holistic understanding of Health and Social Care Services and values. The exam builds on the knowledge developed in components 1 and 2.

What will my child experience in a typical Health and Social Care lesson?

Lessons at Bradfield will include a combination of independent, paired and group work. As well as applying knowledge to personal experiences, case studies are used throughout the course. Teaching and learning consist of theoretical lessons, as well as creative and practical lessons for students to embed their knowledge and understanding. Students will develop their knowledge further in Health and Social Care sectors looking at a range of different job opportunities and the skills, attributes and values required within these roles.

How do we assess progress?

Formative assessment

Learners will be assessed at the end of each learning aim through an extended writing check to allow an understanding of progress made. Homework will be submitted every fortnight which will include a recall of knowledge from previous learning made in lesson.

Summative assessment

To assess Components 1 and 2, pupils will be given two written tasks set and moderated by Pearson exam board. They will be given a case study and will assess an individual’s health and wellbeing, drawing on their understanding of life events from Component 1. They will design a health and wellbeing improvement plan that draws on their knowledge of services and care values from Component 2.

How do we extend and enrich our curriculum?

To extend and enrich our curriculum in health and social care, we incorporate a variety of learning experiences that go beyond the classroom. We organise educational visits to local community services, allowing students to see first hand how care is provided in real-world settings. These visits foster a deeper understanding of the complexities and challenges within the health and social care sectors. Additionally, we have partnered with Sheffield University to offer interactive sessions, where students engage in discussions and activities with professionals, gaining valuable insights into current trends and research. We also provide opportunities for students to explore future careers in health and social care through guest speakers, career fairs, and work placements, helping them make informed decisions about their professional paths. These activities not only broaden students' knowledge but also inspire them to pursue meaningful careers in the field.
