Mental Health and Wellbeing

At Bradfield School we believe that every child deserves to thrive, not only academically but also emotionally and socially. We are dedicated to fostering a nurturing and supportive environment that prioritises mental well-being as a cornerstone of success. We are committed to ensuring that each child feels valued, supported, and equipped to reach their fullest potential, empowering our students with the tools they need to navigate challenges and build resilience.

Healthy Minds School

Bradfield School are proud to share that we are a Healthy Minds School. Healthy Minds is a whole school approach to emotional wellbeing, developed by Sheffield Children’s NHS in collaboration with Sheffield schools. Following initial investment by NHS England and the Department for Education it is now locally commissioned by Sheffield City Council and Sheffield NHS Clinical Commissioning Group and it has reached two thirds of the mainstream schools in Sheffield.

Healthy Minds offers an integrated approach to mental health. It works on the principle that schools are in an excellent position to not just teach about mental health and signpost but to provide environments which enable children and young people to experience emotional wellbeing and thus build their emotional resilience.

We have a dedicated Educational Mental Health Practitioner (EMHP) who works alongside us. Our staff have received training focusing on the core psychological processes which underpin children and young people’s learning and wellbeing, the importance of relationships, emotional regulation, brain development, vulnerability, adverse childhood experiences and whole school activities.

We also have dedicated staff who have embarked on enhanced training with the Healthy Minds Team to become Mental Health Champions. These staff offer extra support through wellbeing, focussed interventions and group activities, whilst pastoral staff are well placed to spot changes in behaviour that might indicate a problem and offer support and guidance. Many things can cause a change in mental health, including traumatic events (e.g. loss or separation, life changes, abuse, domestic violence or bullying).

The Personal Development curriculum taught at Bradfield includes mental health and wellbeing topics in order to raise awareness and understanding and provide strategies for developing positive emotional health and wellbeing and managing mental health. Personal Development has the flexibility to focus on developing children’s resilience, confidence, and ability to learn.

At Bradfield School we also work collaboratively with the Kooth service. Kooth is a free, safe, and anonymous online platform where young people can access mental health support whenever they need it. Delivered in partnership with the NHS, Kooth is available to anyone between the ages of 11-18.

Our students are also encouraged to use the supportive services shared in the school planner, alongside talking to a trusted adult at home and at school. Parents and carers are encouraged to share their worries with school so that we can work together to support our students.
